The Decatur mother relies on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – or SNAP –  to put food on the table.

“when it gets to be the end of the month, i worry how or what I am going to feed them,” Cox said.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services will begin issuing February SNAP benefits two weeks early in order to make sure funding is available.

Cox says she’s grateful because this month has been stressful.

But in the back of her mind, she think this isn’t a good sign.

DHS stated Monday: “This is not an additional payment, so DHS is encouraging participants to budget accordingly for food purchases.”

So now, it’s up to Cox to make her food and her paychecks stretch until March.

“We are just trying to make it work,” Cox said. “We need clothes and they are constantly growing so to think about food as well. It’s tough.”

SNAP participants will receive their benefits January 17.
