Working to Keep You Safe — Inside the National Weather Service, Tulsa

News
TULSA, OK– Weather impacts us all. each day in a different way. In Northwest Arkansas we have our own weather team providing you up to the minute forecast, but who is responsible for getting your weather authority their information? That starts in Tulsa Oklahoma at the National Weather Service.

“It’s everybody working toward the same goal,” said Ed Calianese, NWS Tulsa Warning Coordination Meteorologist.

On a typical day, there are two or three meteorologists on staff monitoring weather conditions around the clock for Northwest Arkansas, but when severe weather is a threat, that number can jump up to 10 or 15.

“Our responsibilities are expanding and what people expect from us kind of expands more and more,” said Calianese.

Every corner you turn, there are dozens of screens, helping meteorologists monitor everything from radar to social media.

Calianese said “some of these other computers, situation awareness displays.”

According to warnings coordinator meteorologist, Ed Calianese, Tulsa will soon be one of only a few test sites across the country implementing a new radar strategy. It’ll work about four times faster than the current system.

“It’s gonna give us that lowest elevation cut almost minute by minute,” said Calianese. “There’s a lot of things that can happen in four or five minutes. Tornadoes form very quickly sometimes, and those radar signatures sometimes occur between those half degree angles.”

Calianese says even though Northwest Arkansas hasn’t had an active severe weather season this year, anything can change at a moment’s notice.

“All it takes is a pattern shift this time of year and the next thing you know is you’re getting event after event after event,” said Calianese.
