HIGHFILL, Ark. (KFTA) — As concerns continue to grow over a government shutdown in Washington, D.C., so do concerns about its affect on upcoming holiday travel.

At the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, safety and functionality are the biggest challenges.

Fortunately, if a government shutdown ultimately happens, XNA officials have assured the region holiday plans are still on schedule thanks to a grant to keep its services running.

“Shutting the government down for a few weeks won’t affect us,” said XNA Chief Operating Officer Kelly Johnson. “They’ll go ahead and fund what they consider ‘central function,’ which are air traffic control, Transportation Security Administration. So we won’t be directly affected unless it goes on for some time.”

The last shutdown was in January and lasted all of two days.

The pressure to pass a new federal budget comes to a head when funding stops Dec. 21.
