You Ask, We Investigate: Motorcyclists warn about dangers of grass clippings on roadways

In this week’s ‘You Ask, We Investigate’ report, KNWA’s Katelynn Zoellner finds out if there is a law in Arkansas prohibiting grass clippings from being blown into the road.

It’s that time of year when people are gassing up lawn mowers to keep their yards looking good. But, the grass clippings can pose a danger to others.

“A lot of people don’t realize how dangerous it is for motorcyclists,” said Karissa Rudsell, a motorcyclist. “It could be the difference between someone making it home safe at night. Everybody out there is somebody’s someone.”

Washington County Attorney Brian Lester said there is no law in Arkansas that makes it illegal to blow grass clippings into the road.

“Arkansas does not have a state law that I found that would make it criminal to blow grass clippings into the street,” he said. “They prohibit litter. They define litter and grass clippings and things like that are not part of their definition. Unfortunately, laws don’t prevent people from committing crimes or doing something, but it certainly helps to raise a lot of awareness.”

Lester said many homeowners don’t give much thought into where they blow grass clippings, because they are not aware of the danger.

“I think a lot of people probably do not realize the inherent danger that accompanies putting your grass out on the street like that,” he said. “No one wants to be liable for someone’s life or injury and so I think it’s an awareness thing. If people were aware, they probably would say, ‘oh ya’ that makes a lot of sense.'”

While Arkansas has no law making it illegal to blow grass clippings into the road, there are municipalities that have ordinances making it illegal to do so.

Fayetteville has an ordinance that requires homeowners to keep sidewalks and gutters free of grass. Blowing grass clippings into the road could be enforceable in Bentonville, as officials said the grass may wash into the city’s stormwater system and cause damage.
