Some Olympians on USA Field Hockey Team have competed with each other since high school. Now they will team up on the world’s biggest stage.
The women’s USA field hockey team begins competition Saturday night with their first game at 5 p.m. against Argentina, which happens to be their biggest rivals.
Hard work and dedication have lead around 11,000 athletes to Rio for the Summer Olympic Games.
For the women of USA Field Hockey, it’s a dream come true and a journey that started in Pennsylvania for four of these athletes.
Kat Sharkey, Alyssa Manley, Kelsey Kolojejchick and Paige Selenski all call the Keystone State home!
“When I was younger, it was a far out dream, but I am very happy to be here and I have worked so hard to get here,” Manley said.
And now that they have arrived, these ladies are certainly been keeping busy.
“We got here last Saturday and we’ve basically just been exploring the village, checking our venue here in Rio and having some good practice sessions,” Sharkey said.
Daily practice sessions last about an hour and a half, giving the athletes plenty of time during the day to rest their bodies ahead of competition.
“We kind of feel that if we put our best out there, that the results will follow,” Selenski said.
They’re also thankful for the good weather.
“The weather has been great. It’s not as humid as back home. So I have been enjoying that, I am not dying out on the field. So it’s been really nice,” Kolojejchick said.
Now, the former Pennsylvania competitors will work together to obtain a piece of gold.
