Hometown: Fayetteville, Arkansas – Fayetteville HS
Dre Greenlaw is a player trying to make a comeback on a team that’s trying to make a comeback. Coming out of high school just a few blocks away in Fayetteville as a 4-star recruit, Greenlaw found himself as a true freshman immediately contributing to Robb Smith’s defense at the linebacker position. In his sophomore season against Alabama however, Greenlaw suffered a broken foot that would cut short any growth he or the defense could hope for.
But returning fresh heading into his junior campaign in Paul Rhoads’ first year as the Hogs’ defensive coordinator, Greenlaw is confident in the new 3-4 scheme Coach Bret Bielema has put in place that emphasizes athleticism.
“He’s paramount to the defense,” coined defensive back Kevin Richardson at the 2017 SEC Media Days. “If we don’t have a Dre Greenlaw out there on the field, then we won’t function as a defense. You have to have people out there who can make plays, and Dre can make any play on the field.”
With the team knowing his importance in the depth chart, if Greenlaw is indeed at 100-percent to lead the front seven on defense, it could be a big morale boost. Watch out for Arkansas’s #23 jersey to be called on in a major way and become among the premier play-makers in 2017.
