Just thinking here about the pitching studs Hog Fans have had the chance to watch in recent years. Trevor Stephan became the focal point in 2017, Blaine Knight ’18, Isaiah Campbell ’19. What a list for Razorback Baseball. With only four SEC Series left this season, it got me thinking, how great is this, getting to watch what Zay is doing while setting the tone for Arkansas? It’s one thing to watch Campbell on TV, but watching him work, especially in front of the electric atmosphere you get at Baum-Walker Stadium, makes it one of the top storylines of this 31-11 run for the Hogs so far.
This guy is the epitome of a guy who bought in to the development process. He arrived on the Hill with great potential, had to miss all of 2017 with an elbow injury, then returned in 2018, but struggled with command at times. He would meltdown early sometimes, then click, and click in a big way in other outings (a la the perfect work produced entering the 5th against Florida in last year’s CWS).
His only loss this year was a 3-2 heartbreaker at Vandy April 12th. Change that script, and he would be 8-0 right now, on track to match Blaine Knight’s perfect mark of 14-0 last season. Instead, Campbell is 7-1 with a 2.44 ERA, and he’s only allowed one home run all year. 78 strikeouts for the righty from Olathe, Kansas…only 10 walks.
Nicknamed The Professor, Campbell mixes a mid-90’s fastball with a cutter, a slurve, and a splitter clocked anywhere from 85 to 89.
I’ll see ya at the Yard Friday ’cause…that’s the best place to be for Hog Athletics Friday. Big Stage, Friday Night SEC Lights. Huge Matchup against 20th-ranked Tennessee, and Isaiah Campbell, in rhythm is one of the best parts of the 2019 college baseball season.
