Weather 101: Different Types of Fog and How it Forms
KNWA/KFTA- Today's Weather 101 topic is all about fog, including the different types and how it develops.
Radiation fog occurs when you have a clear sky and calm winds. This combination of conditions allows the temperature to drop to the dew point to become 100% saturated due to radiational cooling. When this happens, a cloud near the ground will form. This is fog.
Advection fog occurs when warm moist air flows over a colder surface. This colder surface could be a body of water, snow accumulation covering the ground and even a swath of deep hail. As the warm air flows over a colder surface it condenses and forms a cloud.
