5 Signs of Stroke

Your Health
FAYETTEVILLE, AR -May is Stroke Awareness month. We spoke with Dr. Margaret Tremwell Director of the Stroke Center at Washington Regional about the five signs people should look out for.

1. SUDDEN WEAKNESS ON ONE SIDE OF BODY
Eighty percent of strokes involve some form of weakness, heaviness, or numbness on one side of the body or the other. But not both. It can be a face, arm, leg, but it will only be on one side of the body and it will happen within a matter of seconds to minutes.

2. LOSS OF LANGUAGE
The person might appear confused and may not be able to speak at all. If they do speak they may misuse or mispronounce words, and it will be more than just one word. They might not be able to produce recognizable words, so it might appear that they are speaking another language or gibberish.

3. LOSS OF VISION
The person will start walking into things and they don’t understand why. What is happening is that they are seeing one side of space but not the other. So to the person having a stroke their vision seems fine but there is just something wrong.

4. DIFFICULTY WITH BALANCE
The person might have trouble walking straight, they will tend to fall to one side or the other. Sometimes they will complain of double vision, if you look at their eyes one might be askew. They could show signs of nausea or vomiting and facial weakness and/or drooling.

5. WORST HEADACHE OF YOUR LIFE
This headache is so intense that the person is consumed with the headache. They can’t stand the sound of their own voice or even dim light. If you wait the person will eventually begin to display other signs. But don’t wait more than 5 minutes.
